Temasek Review Emeritus:Socio-political website Temasek Review Emeritus (TRE) is expected to issue an apology on Wednesday to Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for allegedly defamatory comments on its website.
In the apology, which TODAY has obtained a copy of, TRE editor Richard Wan acknowledged that the offending post on Feb 16 had meant that Mr Lee was instrumental in securing the appointment of his wife, Madam Ho Ching, as chief executive officer of Temasek Holdings for nepotistic motives.
Mr Wan, who signed off the apology which TODAY understands will be published on the website, admitted and acknowledged that the allegation was false and baseless. He apologised for causing Mr Lee distress and embarrassment.
He added that the offending post has been removed, along with the comments on it. He also undertook not to make any such allegations again.
Mr Wan also urged TRE readers to refrain from commenting on Mdm Ho's appointment at Temasek Holdings as the earlier allegations were untrue and said that it will delete any such allegations posted by anyone on its website.
When contacted by TODAY, Mr Wan confirmed to the newspaper that the website would publish the apology on Wednesday.
On Sunday, Mr Lee's lawyers from Drew and Napier had sent a lawyer's letter to Mr Wan asking him to retract the offending post and to publish an apology on his website by Friday.
Senior Counsel Davinder Singh said in the letter that the excerpt "alleged that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong secured or was instrumental in securing the appointment of his wife, Mdm Ho Ching, as the chief executive officer of Temasek Holdings (Private) Limited for nepotistic motives".
Mr Singh added: "Although our client has suffered damage and incurred costs as a result of the libel, he has not made any demand for damages or cost." He also said that legal proceedings and damages and costs will nonetheless be pursued if TRE did not comply.
Mr Lee's letter to TRE came less than a week after Foreign and Law Minister K. Shanmugam sent a lawyer's letter to well-known blogger Alex Au, asking him to remove from his website allegedly defamatory comments about the minister. Mr Au did so, saying he took Mr Shanmugam at his word. - TODAY
